And the Back Pain Guidelines say...

Here is the purpose of the updated guidelines:

"The purpose of this American College of Physicians (ACP) guideline is to provide treatment guidance based on the efficacy, comparative effectiveness, and safety of noninvasive pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments for acute (<4 weeks), subacute (4 to 12 weeks), and chronic (>12 weeks) low back pain in primary care". The rest is here

Start with the well known adverse effects of pain-killers:Read here

The bottom line of the updated guidelines is to try other natural methods of treatment, that have some supporting research as to effectiveness.

As a doctor of chiropractic (DC), with over thirty years of clinical practice in the evaluation and treatment of back pain, I say this:

If you have back pain, give me call to see if chiropractic can help you.   Dr. Press

"In 2015, 21% of the 31,166 fatal crashes in the U.S. involved at least one driver who tested positive for drugs after the incident — up from 12% in 2005"

CRACKING YOUR KNUCKLES = NO INCREASED ARTHRITIS

Can we now put this ancient myth to rest as being a total lie. This lie was used by the anti-chiropractic crowd as one of the reasons not to have your back treated with chiropractic manipulative therapy. The facts are clear:  Chiropractic care is perhaps the safest and most effective procedure for spine and body pain syndromes.  Dr. Press

Long-Term Use Of Benadryl, Many Over-The-Counter Cold Medications Linked To Dementia

Benadryl, and many over-the-counter cold medications have been used for decades.  Now we learn the end result may result in Dementia.  Article Here

I would suggest to not get sick in the first place, but we all get run down or catch a bug every once in a while.  If possible try alternative remedies. You may even try to battle your could and flu symptoms with tea, extra rest time, more sleep, chicken soup and/or herbal tonics.

Regardless, if you can not cope with the symptoms by drug-less means, please consult with your medical physician for other options.

Best of natural health, always.  Dr. Press

Killing our Heros One Pill at a Time

'...eight oxycodone tablets and several tranquilizers and muscle relaxants...'  Read More Here

This reoccurring tragic story is not right and it is happening too often.  As a country we need to admit the problem is real, admit that it is getting worst and not getting better.

Our heroes need more then just pain pills.  One VA medical facility was nicknamed the Candy Store, because of how easy it was to get  opiates and other pain medicines.

There must be a better way to help our heroes heal and recover without adding to the problem.  Perhaps our medical community should unite with health practitioners whom provide drug-less methods of pain control.  If a soldier is not prescribed natural healing procedures, such as chiropractic care, then they only know one way, opiates, and we are seeing the horrifying results.

As health care providers, let us one work together to help our men and women on and off the battlefield.  Chiropractic care is one of many options for pain relief, such as acupuncture and physical therapy. Increasing the utilization of all available non-opiate treatments needs to be apart of the answer to the drug over dose epidemic in our armed forces.  Let's get started!  Dr. Press

The Pain Medicine Killer Epidemic and Getting Worst

Just think about this for a minute,

"In 2014, the CDC reported a total of 47,055 drug overdose deaths in the United States, 61% of which were attributable to opioids."

Hold that thought and ponder this,

"Oxycontin became one of the most abused prescription drugs to date and is estimated to cause 100,000 drug-related deaths worldwide per year."

Medical Physician, Kristine Scruggs, MD, put the problem of pain medication abuse in simple to understand terms,

"In the case of opioid pain medication, not only is it often not medically indicated to use these medications, but we also take a significant risk each time we prescribe them. We risk our patient developing a dependence or addiction, we risk the medications being diverted or abused, we risk saddling patients with side effects that can be worse than their primary complaint (such as severe constipation and even narcotic bowel syndrome), and we risk someone dying from an overdose of medications we prescribed."

Opioid abuse and addiction is getting worst.  Destroying not only the individual, but families, marriages, jobs and whole communities.

There are several ways to prevent Opioid abuse and addiction from getting worst.  One way is simply, CHIROPRACTIC CARE FIRST.

Affordable Care Act (ACA): Another thing we are finding out, once it was made law

I am not surprised.  There already was a problem with the over prescribing of opioid pain medications.  So now we are finding out  there is an increase in opioid prescriptions directly linked to the ADA.  Studies have previously strongly linked the over use of opioid pain medications, to increased moralities and fatalities, particularly for teens, young adults and the elderly.

"Widely used painkiller (acetaminophen AKA Tylenol) is ineffective against low-back pain and offers only “minimal short-term benefit”

As published in the March 31, 2015 British Medical Journal,

"Conclusions Paracetamol (acetaminophen AKA Tylenol)  is ineffective in the treatment of low back pain and provides minimal short term benefit for people with osteoarthritis. These results support the reconsideration of recommendations to use paracetamol for patients with low back pain and osteoarthritis of the hip or knee in clinical practice guidelines."

What does Dr. Anthony Hamm, president of the American Chiropractic Association recommend:

“There are effective, more conservative treatments that help many patients lessen reliance on addictive painkillers and get back to their normal lives and activities,” said Dr. Hamm. “The services provided by chiropractic physicians are not only clinically effective but also cost-effective, so taking a more conservative approach at the onset of low-back pain can also potentially save both patients and the healthcare system money down the line.”
